Zumba ZLife Magazine

And now for something completely different….    The other day we had the opportunity to do something that is a bit different for me.     We shot a fashion spread for Zumba’s  ZLife Magazine.     It has been a long time since I have shot fashion and I found the change to be refreshing and a lot of fun.    Here are a few images from the shoot.

The Last Word

I had the privilege of working with Chris Toth from Tothwork.com on a pro bono campaign for a great cause the other day.     It’s a PSA to get people to stop texting while they drive.

Imagine you are trading texts with someone special…  your wife, your son or daughter,  your dad….  and you get a text from them saying something trite & trivial like “LOL” or “CU L8R”  only instead of being cute,  it ends up being the most tragic thing you could ever imagine…    Because you see,  in this scenerio,  that was the last thing your special someone ever said.      Boom!   Lights out.  They are gone.

All because they were texting when they should have been paying attention to the road.   What’s worse, they were texting to you.    It’s a hard pill to swallow and the photos strike right at the heart of that message showing you the pain and anguish that these people are feeling.

Special thanks to Chris Toth for coming up with some great creative ideas and to all the talent and crew who generously donated their time for such a worthy endevour.    If we keep just one person from making this tragic mistake it is worthwhile…  hopefully we stop many more.

Don’t Text while driving,  the life you save could be your own.

L.E.D. Snowboarding Video

The spray of the snow, the snaking curves, the pure white backdrop … watching a pro snowboarder glide effortlessly down a mountain pass can be mesmerizing. But when you add a dark night, L.E.D. lighting and a fashion photographer, it can be art.

Surrealist pop culture photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton joined pro snowboarder William Hughes on the slopes of Tignes in the Rhone-Alpes region of southeast France with a Red Epic camera, an L.E.D.-bejeweled snowsuit and, according to Nowness.com, plenty of vin rouge to keep Hughes warm during those three icy nights. The result is something so stunning, it makes you wonder why the Winter X Games are ever held in daylight.

Sutton wanted Hughes to be the only light source in the short film. Although the lights are wrapped around his suit, when Hughes tears into the snow, he’s seems to be glowing from within. Perhaps that’s just the magic of good French wine.

Family Party

Here’s another series of images from the Sunrise Senior Living shoot.    This one was a series from a multigenerational get together.    The elder woman featured in the center is one of the residents and is a spry 96 years old who seems to have the energy and stamina of someone 20 years younger.    She and her gracious family were very generous with time volunteering to be in this shot and later dancing up a storm in a party by the pool! Many thanks to them and my great crew.

Card Sharks.

We just wrapped a two day shoot for Sunrise Senior Living for their advertising and collateral materials.     We had the opportunity to shoot a large group of really great seniors who seem to be loving life in their golden years.      Here are just a few images from the card playing shots we did.    These folks love their card games.    It is serious business for some.    Some never go a day without playing.

We are growing! – It’s a boy!!!!

We have expanded by one!  My wife Deirdre gave birth to our second beautiful baby boy last night!   He was born a full month early but both baby and mommy are resting and doing great!    As you can imagine there is lots to do and it seems everyone is sleeping around here but me so just one photo for now but more to come!    Now we just have settle on the name…..   😉

Dear Santa and Small Miracles….

As the year winds down I find it nice to be able to slow down think about other things.   Not things about work,  but the more important things like family and the holidays.    The simple things that make me grin.    Like helping my 5 year old son Jordan write his letter to Santa and seeing my little (soon to be born) son on the ultrasound the other day.

It’s these simple things that remind me of how lucky I am and to appreciate every minute of it.      I hope that you all can do the same.     Merry Christmas!

Splash! – A Very Wet Look Behind the Scenes.

Here is a very wet look behind the scenes of a recent book shoot.

“Ok Mike,   Just walk out on that rock and look out over the water.  Try to look natural when the waves come up and splash.”        SPLASH!!!!     “That was perfect!    Mike?   Umm… Mike?”     ;-p

Seriously though,   Mike was not harmed in these photos,   While it may look like he was wiped out,   he actually braved the waves relatively unscathed.

We will  be posting the final images soon!  Stay tuned…

Private Defective… by the other Peter Barrett.

Someone I don’t know found this interesting video a while back and sent me an email inquiring about it, thinking that this was me.     I let her know that while the artist here and I share the same name,  I assure you this is not me.   😉

It is however, quite clever… albeit a bit strange and a maybe a bit disturbing.    My 5 year old son Jordan thinks it is hilarious and so do I, so I thought I would post it here for your entertainment.   (Click the Face below to see video, turn up your sound.  It gets good after a while so keep watching)

Lenovo- For those who Do.

Here are the ads we did recently with Saatchi & Saatchi for Lenovo.   It was a really great shoot complete with a guy flying in a water propelled jet pack.    Who doesn’t love jet packs!   We shot 2 days alongside the TV production and 1 day specifically for stills. Special thanks to Hillary & Billy for hiring us and also to my great crew who worked long hours alongside the TV crew for 2 days in the heat!

Nostalgia from FoundXposed.

I seem to be on a roll lately.   The folks at Foundfolios just featured some of my personal work from this summer in their email promo today.

It’s always nice when people take notice of your work want to show it.   While our advertising venues are paid to promote us as photographers,  it is especially nice when they go the extra step and show your work in their own promotions which are over and above the ad space that we pay for.    Much like the AtEdge email ad from my last post,   these dual purpose campaigns do a lot to promote the brand of the sourcebook as well as push the individual photographers in a value added service that they provide their photographers.      Thanks guys!

AtEdge Shoutout!

The folks at AtEdge gave us a shoutout recently by featuring me in their email mailer.     The exposure was great!  We saw a marked increase in web hits as people clicked through to my website and even got a few calls for potential work.   Thanks to Glen Serbin and the folks at AtEdge!

The Dark Side of the Lens

As I am making my way into the world of motion I find myself searching for inspiration and find, like in any medium, there are some very talented folks out there doing really great work. I will post a few here under the “Inspiration” categories from time to time. Check out this very cool video by Director Mickey Smith.

This is a video directed by Henrik Hansen and DP’ed by Adam Richards.   Great direction, beautifully shot and cut.   This documentary was one of 5 films nominated for the 2010 Vimeo Awards.

I actually had the pleasure of working alongside Henrik on a job for Saatchi & Saatchi for Lenovo computers a few weeks back.   Henrik Directed the TV commercial and I shot the still photos for the ad campaign.   My team and I worked in a collaborative effort alongside Henrik and the motion crew for two days then shot a day of just stills.   Great shoot.   I have to say that working alongside Henrik was really a pleasure.   I have worked with my share of directors in the past and at times it can be a trying experience.   In some instances the stills crew is often looked at as a nuisance and treated as such.   Small cog in a larger machine so to speak.   I, however,  am very good at finding ways to work within their crews and respect their protocols and get what I need without getting in their way.

Fortunately working with Henrik was much easier.   He recognized that we are all there to work toward a common goal and gave me access that we needed on their set and we got some really great stuff together.   We were actually able to return the favor on our print day when they needed to shoot some extra footage.   I love when everyone comes together with a collaborative spirit and works together.   It’s the way it should be.

Check out this film that Henrik directed.   It is really nice.
